The two kanji employed in the Sino-Japanese compound of this word rarely appear in other contexts. Neither kanji belongs to the 1,945 常用Jouyou Kanji. It is acceptable to write this word using only hiragana あいさつ, although the full kanji variant挨拶is used just as frequently.
