From a dictionary standpoint, shikumi corresponds to the English words “plan”, “mechanism”, and “device.” In actual usage, it often refers to the way in which something is done, or the means by which a complex set of steps leads to a particular result.

Koyoo hoken no shikumi to yakuwari  o setsumei suru hon desu.

This is a book that explains how employment insurance functions, as well its role.

Kono shoobai ga mookaru shikumi wa nan deshoo ka?

なぜこのように複雑な仕組みになっているか全然わからない。
