だろう・でしょう

darou / deshou

This is the tentative form of the copula. The exact rendering into English varies according to context; but some serviceable translations would be: “I suppose; perhaps; probably.”

Plain form

彼は日本人だろう。

Kare wa Nihonjin darou

I suppose that he is Japanese.

Polite form

あしたは雨でしょう。

Ashita wa ame deshou.

It will probably rain tomorrow.
