Japanese Grammar Tutorials

-dasu /-出す =begin to do, realize an action

When added to the stem of a verb, expresses that the action conveyed by the verb has been started/realized:

In some cases, the -出す  form will translate into English as “started doing x,” as in the first few examples:

Example 1:

新幹線が動き出しました。

Shinkansen ga ugokidashimashita.

The bullet train began to move.

Example 2:

ワインを飲み出しました。

Wain o nomidashimashita.

I started drinking the wine.

Example 3:

突然、雪が降り出した。

Totsuzen, yuki ga furidashita.

It suddenly began to snow.

In other cases, the English translation will emphasize the completion of an action:

Example 4:

息子が欲しがっていた玩具をインターネットで探し出した。

Musuko ga hoshigatte ita omocha o intaanetto de sagashidashita.

I found the toy that my son wanted on the internet.

Example 5:

日本語の語彙を効率よく覚える方法を考え出しました。

Nihongo no goi o kooritsu yoku oboeru hoohoo o kangaedashimashita.

I came up with (thought out) a method for efficiently learning Japanese vocabulary.
